Delighted Toni’s back in work within the week
Toni Normanton from Ashton under Lyne in Greater Manchester spent months of the pandemic diligently applying for hundreds of job vacancies. Losing faith in herself after doing everything she possibly could to find work, the help of her JETS ‘miracle worker’ employment coach got Toni back into work in less than a week.
Having lost her warehousing role in March 2020, Toni registered for more than 20 different job search sites, setting up alerts, receiving daily updates and quickly applying for any customer service or warehousing roles. Unsuccessful with more than 300 job applications despite having relevant skills and experience, Toni was at breaking point when Work Coach Matthew at Ashton Under Lyne Jobcentre Plus referred her to the new WHP JETS employability scheme. Fast forward six days and she had a new job with recommerce retailer, musicMagpie.
“I’m not a sitting around doing nothing sort of person and couldn’t understand where I was going wrong,” says Toni, 31. “I was in tears to Jobcentre Plus, I was just so frustrated at being constantly overlooked by employers.”
In Greater Manchester, Ingeus delivers the Working Well (Work and Health Programme) Job Entry Targeted Support (WHP JETS) programme on behalf of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. The scheme supports recently unemployed people who are keen to get back to work and receives support from the European Social Fund.
Toni attended an online session with Ingeus employment coach Melanie Holt, and immediately felt reassured.
“Melanie was so understanding, she just let me talk,” continues Toni. “She told me firmly that it wasn’t my fault and reassured me that she was going to help. We talked about my past job roles and the skills I could offer to employers, much of which wasn’t obvious on my CV. My applications were therefore being automatically filtered out by employers’ recruitment software.
“Melanie gave me access to the Ingeus iWorks platform which within seconds gave my CV a 76% rating and pointed out where there were issues and repetitions. On the day I spoke to Melanie I put the system to the test, updated my CV, and saw a customer services vacancy with musicMagpie. I was immediately offered an interview and had the conversation with Melanie about my skills fresh in my mind ready for it. I was offered the role that same week, the interviewer said she was ‘bowled over’ by me, I was just so excited to be given a chance. When I was offered the job, I burst into tears again – this time, happy ones!

Toni is now undertaking on-the-job training with musicMagpie and has achieved a 100% customer satisfaction rating to date.
