Clare Sharpe from Workington has a fresh zest for life now she has landed a new job in the hospitality sector – just days after seeking support from the JETS programme.

Clare, 43, previously worked as a warehouse manager for a UK charity. She had steadily progressed with the same organisation for 15 years, but after being made redundant during the pandemic, she decided to explore fresh opportunities in a new industry.

“I was worried that I would struggle to find a new role having done the same thing for so long,” said Clare, who now works for a national bar and restaurant chain. “But after being helped by my Ingeus employment coach Bobbie Crane, I was invited for a job interview within a few days and was offered the job less than a week later. I couldn’t believe it!”

Clare’s fortunes changed after being referred to Job Entry Targeted Support (JETS), a separate strand of the Work and Health Programme (WHP), delivered in the North West by Ingeus. It is commissioned and financed by the Department for Work and Pensions and deemed to be a European Social Fund match funded programme.

Her employment coach was able to advise Clare on how to create a cover letter to accompany her up-to-date CV and she was helped to improve her interview technique, which boosted her self-confidence.

“Being made redundant was a real blow for me,” explained Clare. “For the first time in my life I found myself out of work. I hadn’t taken part in an interview for more than 10 years.”

As an Ingeus supported client, Clare was able to brush up her interview approach by using iWorks, an online employability resource. She recorded herself answering questions and reviewed the recording to see how she presented herself and hone her answers.

“I was also helped with a one to one session with a group facilitator to really polish my approach before I went to my interview,” continues Clare. “I felt very prepared and confident. Soon afterwards I heard that I’d been successful and could start my 13 week training programme.

“It’s a busy environment, but I am enjoying every day and my colleagues are very friendly. I am glad that I made the change, and am currently working behind the bar serving drinks and taking food orders.”
