Katharine Parker was experiencing job-search fatigue when she was referred to Ingeus’ WHP JETS, an employability programme for people looking for work.
Forty-one year old Katharine from Windermere in Cumbria had enjoyed several managerial roles in the arts and culture sector but, after being made redundant, she had struggled to find suitable employment in an area so badly affected by the pandemic.
Determined to find a new job, Katharine applied for vacancies in other industries but despite receiving good feedback, she was repeatedly the runner-up. Katharine was eventually referred by Kendal Jobcentre Plus to the WHP JETS employment support programme.
“The repeated knock-backs eventually took their toll,” said Katharine. “I was mentally exhausted; I had job-search fatigue. I was trying to remain positive but inside I was feeling deflated and full of self-doubt.”
Ingeus, working in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), is delivering the Work and Health Programme (WHP) expansion for Job Entry Targeted Support (JETS). It is co-financed by the European Social Fund and provides fast paced continuous support to participants negatively affected by COVID-19 labour market changes.
Employment Coach Laura-Fay Hughes reassured Katharine that the JETS programme could help her to rebuild her confidence and advised her to look for roles that would utilise her people skills.
Katharine added: “I knew that I was speaking with someone who understood the situation that I was in and could see what I’d been trying to do. Laura-Fay empathised without being condescending or pitying.
“With the JETS programme on board I felt as if I suddenly had a whole team of people in my corner and I was excited to see what would come of it.”
Now feeling more optimistic, Katharine applied for a home based customer service vacancy and was successful.
“I was looking for job security in an uncertain time,” explained Katharine. “I wanted to play my part during the current crisis and to take on work in which I would feel valued and could make a real difference.
“My role involves making telephone contact with lots of different people; many haven’t had an opportunity to talk about how they are coping during the pandemic and with lockdown restrictions. It is great to feel that I am trying to help through these difficult times.”
Ingeus supports the delivery of JETS in the North West, Greater London, Greater Manchester, the North East, and Central areas.
